Township History

Monroe Township is a second class township formed in 1825 encompassing 26.8 square miles and a population of 5,823 as listed by the 2010 Census.  Geographically, Monroe Township is one of the southern tier townships of Cumberland County.  It is bounded on the north by Silver Springs Township, on the east by Upper Allen Township, on the west by South Middleton Township, and on the south by York County.  A chain of the South Mountains extends over the southern portion of the township.  In the fertile slopes of these mountains are numerous beds of valuable iron ore.  The Yellow Breeches Creek flows eastward just north of the slopes of these mountains.  North of this creek are the rich limestone, slightly rolling farmlands where numerous farm buildings dot the blue horizon, many of which date back to the 1770's.

Monroe is still a relatively quiet, rural community with much farmland, even with the new residential developments that have added to the population count in recent years.
